Decano, Serafica Tops Karate Meet

Karatedo

SRBCL first grader Christian Judge J. Decano and third grader Matthew Jose R. Serafica did their families and the whole SRBCL school community proud with their medal winning performance during the Bawingan Karate Cup held in Baguio City last July 12, Sunday.

Despite being a relative new comer to the sport, red and white belter Decano turned in an exceptional performance in both his events. Six- year old Christian won the gold medal in the Boys Kumite (Age 6-7 year old division) and the silver medal in the Boys Kata (Age 6-7 year old division).

Eight year old green belter Serafica won bronze medals for both his events in Kata and Kumite (Age 8 – 9 years old).

The karate meet was part of the of anniversary celebration of the Shin Shin Karate Organization in cooperation with YMCA Baguio. The meet is in memory of William Bawingan, the founder of the Shin Shin Karate Organization.

Both Decano and Serafica are flourishing under the expert tutelage of  Dr. Enrico Vasquez, a master of Wado-Ryu Philippines and of course, the support of their parents, families, the school, and friends.

Important Notice to SRBCL Families

We have been informed that a group of persons (3 women and a man) have been misrepresenting themselves as employees of St. Robert Bellarmine Inc. They apparently gain entry to your homes under the pretense of following up on pupil enrollment or collection of accounts.

SRBCL Inc. has not authorized a person or persons to do home visits either to do marketing jobs or more importantly, to collect payments. All financial transactions are only done at the SRBCL offices. We have never and will never use home visits and telephone brigades as marketing strategies.

Kindly inform your kids or house help not to let this group enter your homes. They apparently show ID’s with our logo and a student list. We are at the moment trying to trace where this group may have acquired such a list but rest assured that we have been very careful with our students’ records.

Stop Influenza A (H1N1)

DepEd Advisory on Influenza A (H1N1)
Enclosure to DepEd Memorandum No. 206, s. 2009

What is Influenza A (H1N1)? What causes it?
Influenza A is caused by a novel virus that resulted from the re-assortment of four (4) viruses from pigs, humans and birds. It is the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans, including the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic which killed 50 – 100 million people worldwide.

What are the signs and symptoms of Influenza A (H1N1)?
Similar to that symptoms of regular flu such as:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Lack of appetite
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Cough

Other Signs:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

How is Influenza A (H1N1) transmitted?
There is no vaccine yet to protect humans from the virus. However the following measures should be done to prevent infection:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing
  • Always wash hands with soap and water
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  • Avoid close contact with sick people
  • Increase your body’s resistance by:
    • Having at least 8 hours of sleep
    • Being physically active
    • Managing your stress
    • Drinking plenty of fluids
    • Eating nutritious foods

From now on everybody with fever and signs of infection should not go to school or work and should avoid being near other people

A Life Filled with Love

2379902462_bf8ff53dc1
With Valentines’ just around the corner, people are once again reminded of the beauty and importance of love. However with its’ over commercialization, you have people reducing the occasion to a mere exchange of flowers, chocolates or cards – empty sentiments printed on mass produced cards, or impersonal forwarded e-mail or text messages.

Valentine’s Day more than a celebration of romantic love should take on a greater meaning and dimension. Although admittedly the celebration of love should not be concentrated on a single day of the year, February 14 can probably be used as a day to remind people of the importance of filling one’s life with love. After all, a life devoid of it is not worth celebrating or living.

Love comes in many forms and expressions. It does not always come in overt and obvious ways. Love also comes in the silent actions and gestures of the people around you. Be observant and be conscious of the people who in their own unique way show that they care for you and your well-being.

Love is a gift and whether deserving or not, we sometimes find ourselves in the receiving end. It is a truly pathetic person who cannot see and appreciate the beauty of the gift that is extended him.

I once read that we are all angels with one wing, and the only way we can fly is by embracing each other. Imagery so beautifully apt – a person who embraces and supports others can only be lifted together with them. A person who dwells in hatred, jealousy, and mean spiritedness truly resides in a dark place – broken, incomplete, and unloved.

Valentine’s is not a mere celebration of love – it is in fact a celebration of life.

Happy Valentine’s Day.
